System Requirements

1. Minimum vs. Recommended Configuration

Meeting the minimum requirements means the computer is within the intended support range; it does not guarantee identical performance with every PDF, Word document, network, security product, or document size. Recommended specifications provide a better experience for large files and longer reading sessions.

3. Processor Requirements

ReadThisAloud requires a Windows 11-compatible 64-bit processor. A dual-core processor is the practical minimum for the Reader interface and document-processing workload, while a modern four-core or better processor is recommended for smoother handling of larger documents and simultaneous Windows activity.

Processor speed alone does not determine performance. Storage speed, available RAM, document complexity, Windows background activity, antivirus scanning, and network conditions can all affect how quickly a document opens and narration begins.

4. Memory (RAM)

Minimum: 4 GB RAM.

Recommended: 8 GB RAM for normal use and 16 GB for users who routinely open larger, image-heavy, or complex documents while running other applications.

Large PDFs and Word documents may require substantially more memory than short TXT files or pasted text. When Windows is already low on available memory, the Reader may load more slowly or Windows may move application data to disk, reducing responsiveness.

5. Storage Requirements

Maintain at least 1 GB of available disk space for installation, updates, temporary processing, and ordinary application operation. ReadThisAloud recommends at least 2 GB of free space before installation so Windows and the Reader have room to operate comfortably.

This does not include the storage needed for your own documents or exported WAV narration. WAV files can be substantially larger than compressed audio formats, especially for long documents.

Windows itself also requires free storage for updates, temporary files, paging, and recovery operations. A nearly full system drive can cause performance and reliability problems unrelated to ReadThisAloud.

6. Display and Screen Resolution

Minimum display: 1280 × 720 pixels.

Recommended: 1920 × 1080 or higher for the most comfortable document, navigation, and narration-control layout.

Windows display scaling may affect how much of the Reader interface fits on screen. Very high scaling percentages, very small displays, unusual remote-desktop resolutions, or custom accessibility scaling can change the visible workspace.

A dedicated graphics card is not required for normal ReadThisAloud use; a graphics configuration capable of running a supported Windows 11 desktop environment is generally sufficient.

7. Audio Requirements

A functioning Windows audio-output device is required to hear narration. This can be built-in speakers, external speakers, wired headphones, USB audio, Bluetooth headphones, a headset, or another Windows-supported playback device.

ReadThisAloud volume is affected by both application controls and Windows system audio. If narration appears to be running but no sound is heard, verify the active Windows playback device, system volume, application volume, and headset or Bluetooth connection.

9. Firewall, Proxy, VPN, and Corporate Network Requirements

ReadThisAloud requires outbound HTTPS communication to ReadThisAloud services. Standard outbound TCP port 443 must not be blocked for required ReadThisAloud endpoints.

Corporate firewalls, web filters, secure web gateways, VPNs, proxies, SSL/TLS inspection systems, endpoint-security tools, or DNS filtering can interfere with application activation or cloud narration even when ordinary websites still appear to work.

If ReadThisAloud works on a personal/home network but not on an employer network, the employer's IT department may need to review and permit the required outbound service communication.

ReadThisAloud customers should not bypass organizational security controls without authorization. Corporate IT remains responsible for approving software and network access inside the organization's environment.

10. ReadThisAloud Account and License Requirements

Paid and trial use may require a valid ReadThisAloud customer account, current license or subscription, and an authorized device activation. Device limits depend on the purchased plan.

Customers should maintain access to the email address associated with their account because it may be used for password recovery, billing notifications, security messages, and account verification.

Customers do not need their own Microsoft Azure account, Azure subscription, Azure Speech key, or ReadThisAloud backend API secret.

11. Supported Document and Text Types

ReadThisAloud is designed to work with:

• supported text-based PDF documents;
• supported Microsoft Word DOCX documents;
• plain-text TXT files; and
• text pasted directly into the Reader.

File support does not mean that every document of that extension will extract identically. Password protection, damaged files, unusual encodings, embedded objects, complex page structure, columns, tables, forms, headers, footers, and third-party document-generation software can affect text extraction.

12. PDF, Scanned Document, and OCR Limitations

A PDF can look like text on screen while actually containing only scanned page images. If text cannot be selected or copied, the PDF may not contain a usable text layer for narration.

Unless OCR capability is specifically included in the installed ReadThisAloud version, image-only documents must first be converted to searchable text using OCR software before the Reader can narrate them as text.

Even searchable PDFs can contain an internal reading order that differs from their visual layout. Multi-column documents, forms, tables, and desktop-publishing exports are common examples.

13. WAV Export Requirements

WAV export requires a writable destination folder and sufficient free disk space. Windows folder permissions, controlled folders, OneDrive or other cloud-sync restrictions, endpoint security, or a full disk can prevent an export from being created.

Long narration can create large WAV files. Users who regularly export complete reports, books, training manuals, or other long documents should maintain substantially more free storage than the basic Reader installation requires.

14. Installation Permissions

Depending on the final installer configuration and the Windows environment, installation or updating may require administrator approval. On a personally managed computer, Windows may display a User Account Control prompt during setup.

Employer-managed computers may prevent users from installing software even when they have a valid ReadThisAloud license. In those environments, an IT administrator may need to install or approve ReadThisAloud.

Daily use should not be assumed to require unrestricted administrator privileges. Customers should not routinely run applications as administrator unless required by their organization's approved configuration.

15. Antivirus, Endpoint Protection, and Windows Security

Customers should maintain reputable Windows security protections. Do not disable antivirus, endpoint protection, Windows security features, certificate validation, or organization-mandated controls merely to install ReadThisAloud.

New or recently updated applications can occasionally be flagged by reputation-based security systems. If an official ReadThisAloud installer is blocked, verify that it came from ReadThisAloud.com and contact ReadThisAloud Support or your IT administrator before creating an exception.

16. Business, School, and Managed IT Environments

Organizations should evaluate ReadThisAloud before broad deployment. Relevant considerations include:

• supported Windows version and update policy;
• software-installation permissions;
• endpoint-protection and application-control policies;
• proxy, firewall, and outbound HTTPS rules;
• seat and device assignment;
• document-classification and data-handling policies;
• user account and password-management requirements;
• WAV export and local-storage restrictions; and
• privacy, security, procurement, and compliance review.

17. Virtual Machines, Remote Desktop, and Hosted Windows

Virtual machines, Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, Citrix, Remote Desktop, VDI, and similar environments may introduce differences in audio routing, device identity, graphics, networking, licensing, user profiles, storage permissions, and application persistence.

Unless ReadThisAloud expressly lists a virtual or hosted environment as supported, compatibility should be evaluated before organizational deployment. A configuration that can launch the application is not automatically equivalent to an officially supported production environment.

19. Software Updates and Minimum Supported Version

ReadThisAloud may release bug fixes, security updates, compatibility changes, and feature improvements. Some updates may become necessary for continued communication with licensing or cloud speech services.

ReadThisAloud may establish a minimum supported Reader version when an older build cannot safely or reliably communicate with production services. Keeping ReadThisAloud and Windows reasonably current is part of maintaining a supported environment.

20. Factors That Affect Performance

Even on a supported computer, performance can vary based on:

• document page count and text volume;
• PDF complexity and text-extraction quality;
• image-heavy or table-heavy documents;
• available RAM and CPU load;
• disk speed and available storage;
• Windows background activity;
• antivirus or endpoint-security scanning;
• network speed, latency, and stability;
• VPN, proxy, firewall, or TLS inspection;
• cloud speech-provider availability; and
• other applications running at the same time.

Progressive narration is intended to keep long documents practical, but it does not eliminate the time required to extract, segment, transmit, synthesize, and return new narration.

System Requirements describe the environment ReadThisAloud intends to support; they are not a guarantee that every third-party document, network, audio device, security tool, corporate configuration, or cloud provider will behave identically.

ReadThisAloud may revise these requirements as Windows, Microsoft Azure, application dependencies, security standards, and the Reader itself evolve. The requirements published for the current release should be used when evaluating a new installation.
